Pancake Batter vs Waffle Batter

Breakfast is believed by a lot of people to be the most important meal of the day. But unfortunately many people these days are very busy when it comes to preparing breakfast, they tend to choose the easier way. Some people choose to eat toast with a cup of coffee, tea, or milk. Some other choose to eat cereals with milk in the morning. When we have limited time to work in the kitchen in the morning and have to prepare something fast, our decision may land with pancake or waffle. They are typically easy to make, and does not take a long time to cook. These two also taste good and loved by many people range from children to elderly people. But whether these two are made from the same batter or not, since they taste quite the same, so here is some explanation about the difference between pancake batter and waffle batter.

Pancake Batter
Pancake is a flat cake, usually is thin and round, and made from starch-based batter which may contains eggs, milk and butter. Pancake is cooked in a hot flat surface like a frying pan or griddle, and is cooked with butter or oil. Pancake may first made by people in ancient Greeks, they called it teganites or tagenites. At that time tegenites were made from wheat flour, olive oil, honey, and curdled milk, and served for breakfast. There are other kind of pancake made in ancient Greeks, they are called staitites, and this type of pancake are topped with honey, sesame, and cheese. The word pancake itself appear in English in the 15th Century. Pancake has a lot of varieties depend on which region they came from.

In Africa their pancake are called injera. Injera is a yeast-risen flatbread with a unique, slightly spongy texture and it is made from teff flour. It is currently the national dish in Ethiopia and Eritrea. Indian style pancake does not use raising agent and cooked using a north Indian style called cheela. Pancakes are very popular worldwide, in Canada, UK, Ireland, New Zealand, and Australia there is a day called “Pancake Day”. In the United States and France it is better known as Shrove Tuesday. Traditional pancake batter are made with all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, white sugar, milk, egg and melted butter. To prepare it, mix all the said ingredients in a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, salt and sugar. By making a well in the center and pour the milk, egg and melted butter, mix them until smooth. Heat a lightly oiled griddle or frying pan over medium high heat. Pour or scoop the batter onto the griddle, for approximately ¼ cup for each pancake. Flip when one side is brown, after both side is cooked serve immediately. You can add toppings into your pancake like honey, fruit jelly, butter, peanut butter, maple syrup, ice cream or anything you preferred.

Waffle Batter
Waffle is a dish made from leavened batter or dough, which is cooked between two plates that are patterned to give it a shape, characteristic size, and a surface impression. There are dozens types of waffle iron being marketed these days. Start from the common Belgium waffle iron which has a rectangle shape to a waffle pan that can produce a character shaped waffle. Waffle get its shape like we know today from the 13th Century, when a craftsman has an idea of forging some cooking plates or irons that can produce characteristic pattern of honeycombs. The word waffle itself comes from an old French word Wafla which means a piece of a honeybee hive. The traditional waffle batter are made from all-purpose flour, salt, baking powder, white sugar, eggs, warm milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. To cook the waffle, mix together flour, salt, baking powder and sugar in a large bowl, then set aside. Preheat waffle iron into the desired temperature. In a separate bowl, beat eggs, stir it with milk, butter, and vanilla. Pour the mixture into the flour mix and stir them together. Ladle the batter into the preheated waffle iron and cook the waffles until golden and crisp.

Conclusion
The difference between pancake batter and waffle batter is waffle batter contains more fat than pancake batter, waffle are commonly made with more eggs than pancake. Eggs are required to make the waffle produce a crisp exterior and fluffy texture. Waffle batter also contain higher percentage of sugar than pancake for caramelization. the method of mixing the batter are also different, waffle batter are mix separately between the dry mix and wet mix then it will be combined right before it cook. While pancake batter are made by mixing together all the dry and wet ingredients at the same time. Both pancake and waffle taste equally good, it up to your personal taste on deciding which one suit your taste the most.
